1242: Gateway to the West

Set in the 13th century, this historical adventure focuses on the Mongol invasion of Eastern Europe. Following the defeat of the Hungarian army, Batu Khan leads his forces toward the castle of Esztergom, which remains the final obstacle preventing further advancement into Europe. The fortress is defended by a Spanish mercenary and a local canon. As they prepare for a decisive battle, the arrival of a Papal Legate and the timing of Mongol New Year celebrations provide a small chance for the defenders to succeed.

The film was directed by Péter Soós, who previously directed Csaó, Bambínó! in 2005. The screenplay was written by Áron Horváth. The ensemble cast includes Ray Stevenson, Eric Roberts, Michael Ironside, David Schofield, Neil Stuke, and Genevieve Chenneour, with a total of 27 credited actors.
