Short description
When investigative reporter Irwin "Fletch" Fletcher goes undercover to write a piece on the drug trade at a local beach, he's approached by wealthy businessman Alan Stanwyk, who offers him $50,000 to murder him. With sarcastic wit and a knack for disguises, Fletch sets out to uncover Stanwyk's story.

What's left behind the scenes

  • When choosing an actor for the lead role, Gregory McDonald—the screenwriter and author of the Fletcher novels that served as the literary basis for the script—rejected Mick Jagger and Burt Reynolds, and suggested that Chevy Chase play the journalist Fletcher.
  • The film depicts a banquet in honor of Fred Dorfman. This was the name of Kent Dorfman's brother in John Landis's comedy Animal House (1978), which Chevy Chase was originally intended to star in. The role intended for Chase was later given to Tim Matison, who also appeared in Fletcher.
  • In the scene with the character played by William Trailer, Chevy Chase's character performs his signature gag—looking at his watch on the wrong wrist.
  • According to Chevy Chase, he wore dentures while playing J. Gordon Liddy, which helped him remain unrecognizable.
  • On the original posters, Fletcher is shown in various disguises, including that of a hockey player. The scenes in which he is in this disguise did not make it into the film.
  • According to director Michael Ritchie, while the script for Fletcher was being developed, Andrew Bergman (one of the screenwriters) became the director of the sequel to the film Father of the Bride (Arthur Hiller, 1979), but was later removed from the position. In Bergman's absence, Ritchie invited Jerry Belson (1938-2006) and Phil Alden Robinson to write the script. Bergman soon returned to the project and helped finalize the screenplay.
  • According to George Wyner, his character was originally written for only one scene, but was later added to another scene, albeit under a different name.
  • In the film's finale, the main character is shown wearing the same baseball cap that viewers saw Brett (played by Harry Dean Stanton) wearing in Ridley Scott's sci-fi film 'Alien' (1979).
