Lolita

A European scholar of French literature arrives in a small New England town to take up a teaching post. He rents a room from a widow, Charlotte Haze, whose company he finds tiresome, but he stays once he meets her young daughter, Dolores, known as Lolita. The girl stirs memories of a youthful love he has never put behind him, and his fixation on her shapes everything that follows. To remain near Lolita, he agrees to marry Charlotte, and after his wife's death he and the girl travel together; as she grows more independent, his jealousy tightens his hold on her. Adrian Lyne directed the film, the seventh of the nine features he has made, working from a screenplay by Stephen Schiff. Jeremy Irons plays Humbert Humbert, with Dominique Swain as Lolita, Melanie Griffith as Charlotte, and Frank Langella as Clare Quilty. Among the credited crew were 69 people. It was a large production by the standards of its kind, with a budget reported at 62 million dollars, and it was released in 1997 to a worldwide box office return of about 1 million dollars. Reception was moderate across the board: a film critics' rating of 6.9 out of 10 from 26 reviews, an IMDb score of 6.8 from roughly 74,000 votes, and a TMDB rating of 7.1 from a much smaller body of 2,040 votes.
