Short description

Proof is a drama centred on Catherine, a young woman in her late twenties who has spent years caring for her father Robert, a celebrated mathematician whose mind has begun to fail. Around the time of her twenty-seventh birthday, two arrivals unsettle the household: her sister Claire, from whom she has grown distant, and Hal, a former student of Robert's who is convinced the professor's many notebooks may hold important mathematical work. As Catherine sorts through her father's papers and her own feelings about him, she is troubled by the possibility that she has inherited both his brilliance and his instability.

John Madden directed the film, his seventh of fourteen features, following Captain Corelli's Mandolin and preceding Killshot. David Auburn, who wrote the stage play the film is based on, shares screenplay credit with Rebecca Miller. Gwyneth Paltrow plays Catherine, with Anthony Hopkins as Robert, Jake Gyllenhaal as Hal and Hope Davis as Claire. It was produced by John N. Hart, Jeffrey Sharp and Alison Owen for Endgame Entertainment, Serendipity Point Films, Miramax and Hart-Sharp Entertainment.

The film runs 100 minutes and was released in September 2005. Made for about 20 million dollars, it took roughly 8 million dollars worldwide, a modest return against its cost. On IMDb it holds 6.4 out of 10 from 143 reviews, and on TMDB it also stands at 6.4 from 757 votes, so critics and audiences landed in much the same place.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Jake Gyllenhaal's character talks about the Riemann hypothesis, which is one of the so-called open, or unsolved, problems in mathematics, a category that once included Fermat's Last Theorem.
  • Gwyneth Paltrow reprises her role as Katherine, which she previously played on stage in the West End.
  • Two weeks before the scheduled start of filming, Gwyneth Paltrow's father, Bruce Paltrow, unexpectedly passed away. The actress was so shocked that she even considered leaving the project. Her brother convinced her that it would be better for her to film than to mope around the house and grieve.
