Once Is Not Enough

Once Is Not Enough follows January Wayne, the daughter of a Hollywood producer whose career has faded and whose finances have collapsed. After a long recovery in a Swiss hospital following a motorcycle accident, she returns to New York to find that her father, Mike, has married Deidre, a wealthy and spiteful woman, for her money rather than love. Deidre tries to push January toward her younger cousin David, a rich playboy, while January instead becomes involved with Tom Colt, an older screenwriter. The conflict grows out of January's attempts to spite her father and the damage her family's compromises inflict on her.

The film is a 1975 adaptation of a Jacqueline Susann novel, directed by Guy Green as the fourth of the four features listed for him, arriving after The Angry Silence, A Patch of Blue and The Magus. Julius J. Epstein wrote the screenplay, Howard W. Koch produced, and the large credited cast of 27 is led by Kirk Douglas, Alexis Smith, David Janssen, George Hamilton, Melina Mercouri and Gary Conway.

Released on June 20, 1975, the drama runs 121 minutes and took in about 16 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 4.7 out of 10 from 978 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 5.2 out of 10 from 18 votes, a small sample that limits how much the two figures can be compared.
