What's left behind the scenes

  • Among the extras who appeared in the film, there were 53 homosexuals, 43 of whom died of AIDS within the following year.
  • The release of “Philadelphia” was accompanied by massive protests from the Baptist Church in Kansas.
  • Courtroom scenes were filmed in a real courtroom without the use of sets.
  • The role of Andrew Beckett was offered to Daniel Day-Lewis, Michael Keaton, and Andy Garcia.
  • For his role in the film, Tom Hanks lost 12 kilograms.
  • John Leguizamo turned down the role of Miguel.
  • The film was partially inspired by the legal battle between Jeffrey Bauer and the law firm Baker&McKenzie.
  • The home recordings at the end, showing Andrew as a child, are actual footage of a young Tom Hanks.
