Short description
Philadelphia follows Andrew Beckett, a talented lawyer at a respected Philadelphia firm whose career unravels when his employers learn he is gay and has contracted AIDS. Rather than admit the real reason, they claim he mishandled a case and dismiss him. Convinced he has been wronged, Andrew looks for someone to take on his former employers, and eventually finds an ally in Joe Miller, a personal injury lawyer whose initial reluctance gives way to commitment as the case proceeds. The two men, different in background and outlook, build an unlikely partnership while facing a powerful opponent.
Jonathan Demme directed the film, the ninth of the fourteen he made, arriving between The Silence of the Lambs and Beloved. Ron Nyswaner wrote the screenplay, and Demme produced with Edward Saxon. Tom Hanks plays Andrew, with Denzel Washington as Joe Miller, and Jason Robards, Mary Steenburgen, Antonio Banderas and Ron Vawter among the supporting cast.
Released in December 1993, the film cost about 26 million dollars and took roughly 207 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.7 out of 10 from around 273,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.7 from just under 5,000. A critics' rating of 7.1 from 63 reviews sits close to those audience scores, indicating broadly favourable but not unanimous reception.
