Sam Harper, a struggling salesman, returns to Los Angeles for the funeral of his estranged father, a record producer. At the reading of the will, he learns he has a sister, Frankie, whose existence was kept from him, and that his father wanted $150,000 in cash delivered to her and her twelve-year-old son, Simon. With his own finances in poor shape, Sam hesitates over the money and instead seeks Frankie out without revealing who he is, gradually becoming part of her life while she remains unaware of their connection.
The film is a drama directed by Alex Kurtzman, his first feature as director; he also wrote the screenplay with Roberto Orci and Jody Lambert. Chris Pine plays Sam, Elizabeth Banks plays Frankie, and Michelle Pfeiffer appears as Sam's mother, Lillian. Olivia Wilde, Mark Duplass and Devin Brochu round out the main cast across a credited ensemble of forty performers.
Made for about $16 million, the film took in roughly $12 million worldwide. On TMDB it holds a rating of 6.8 out of 10 from 673 votes, while a critics' rating of 5.7 out of 10 from 119 reviews places professional assessments slightly below the audience response. It was followed, in Kurtzman's directing career, by The Mummy in 2017.
