Short description
Forgetting Sarah Marshall centres on Peter Bretter, a musician who has spent years in the shadow of his girlfriend, television actress Sarah Marshall. When she ends the relationship for a British rock star named Aldous Snow, Peter falls apart. His friend Brian pushes him to take a trip to Hawaii to clear his head. At his hotel he meets Rachel, a receptionist, but any hope of a fresh start is complicated when Sarah and Aldous turn up at the same resort.
The film was released in 2008 and runs 111 minutes. It was directed by Nicholas Stoller, the first of the films he has directed in the order listed, and written by Jason Segel, who also plays Peter. Kristen Bell plays Sarah, Mila Kunis plays Rachel, and Russell Brand plays Aldous. Bill Hader and Jonah Hill appear in supporting roles. Judd Apatow and Shauna Robertson produced, with Universal Pictures and Apatow Productions behind it.
Made for about 30 million dollars, it took roughly 105 million worldwide, a strong return. On IMDb it holds 7.1/10 from around 319,000 votes; on TMDB it sits at 6.5/10 from a much smaller base of 3,795. A critics' rating of 7.2/10 from 183 reviews places it slightly above the IMDb audience figure. Stoller later directed Get Him to the Greek, The Five-Year Engagement, Neighbors and its sequel, Storks, Bros, Animals United 2: The Chilldown and You're Cordially Invited.
What's left behind the scenes
- During the filming of a scene riding a horse, Kristen Bell injured her leg. This scene was cut during editing, and in scenes towards the end of the film, the actress walks with a slight limp.
- When the film was first released, Universal Studios hired people who flew over cities where the film was playing in theaters and wrote the phrase “I hate you, Sarah Marshall!” in the sky with smoke. Women with that name began receiving phone calls from friends checking to see if they were alright with their husbands or boyfriends. Some of these women sued the filmmakers, but were told that such writings did not violate the First Amendment to the US Constitution.
