Grandma's Boy
Short description
Grandma's Boy follows Alex, a 35-year-old video game tester who is the oldest and most skilled person at his job. When his roommate squanders the rent money, Alex loses his apartment and has nowhere to go. Despite his embarrassment, he moves in with his grandmother Lilly and her two elderly friends, while telling his coworkers he is living with three young women. At the same time, a rival at work tries to take credit for the game Alex is secretly developing, and Alex falls for his new boss, Samantha.
The comedy was directed by Nicholaus Goossen and written by Allen Covert, Nick Swardson and Barry Wernick. It is the first feature Goossen directed, followed years later by Drugstore June. Covert, who had appeared in other Happy Madison productions, takes the lead here as Alex, with Doris Roberts as Grandma Lilly and Linda Cardellini as Samantha. The cast also includes Joel David Moore, Shirley Knight and Shirley Jones.
Made for about 5 million dollars, the film earned roughly 7 million worldwide, a modest return. Audiences have rated it 6.9 out of 10 on IMDb from about 93,000 votes and 6.5 out of 10 on TMDB, while a critics' rating stands at 3.6 out of 10, so viewers have been far more favorable toward it than reviewers.
What's left behind the scenes
- The long scene in which Joel Moore's character rides an electric scooter around the house could not be shot in one take, because at one point the operator with the camera ran into a fence.
- In the scene where the grandmother is gardening and Samantha drives up, the house behind the grandmother is the same one used in the series “Charmed”; the last season of the series was filmed around the same time as the film.
- When Joel Moore's character tells the character played by Kevin Nylund about the Demonik game, he replies: "It's a complete Miyamoto." This is a reference to Shigeru Miyamoto, a Japanese game designer and creator of video game series such as Mario, Donkey Kong, The Hyrule, and others.
