Back to Black is a biographical drama about the British singer and songwriter Amy Winehouse, tracing her rise from performing in the clubs of Camden in the early 2000s to worldwide fame. The story follows her early recordings and the relationships that shaped her songwriting, centering on her turbulent romance with Blake Fielder and the period in which she wrote and recorded the album that gave the film its title. Raised in a musical family and determined to stay true to her own voice rather than follow the guidance of her record label, she faces the pressures of success and her own struggles with drink and drugs.
Sam Taylor-Johnson directed the film, her fifth feature after Destricted, Nowhere Boy, Fifty Shades of Grey and A Million Little Pieces, from a screenplay by Matt Greenhalgh. Marisa Abela plays Amy, with Jack O'Connell as Blake, Eddie Marsan as her father Mitch, Lesley Manville as her grandmother Cynthia, and Juliet Cowan and Sam Buchanan in supporting roles. The production, made across the United Kingdom, the United States and France, cost around 30 million dollars and took roughly 51 million dollars worldwide.
On IMDb the film holds a rating of 6.3 from about 31,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.7 from around 751 votes. A critics' rating of 4.9 from 184 reviews places it below both audience scores.
