What's left behind the scenes

  • Masashi Kishimoto, credited as the screenwriter (author of the manga that served as the literary source for the script), came up with the name "Naruto" while eating ramen, and based the manga's plot on memories of his own childhood.
  • The names of some characters (Jiraiya, Tsunade, Orochimaru) are borrowed from a series of stories dating back to the end of the Edo period (1603-1868), collectively known as "The Tale of the Gallant Jiraiya." All of these characters possess certain magical abilities.
  • All ninjas wear headbands; the main character was shown wearing protective goggles in the first episode, but the artist later decided that drawing goggles was too much effort and replaced them with a headband.
  • Kankuro from the Sand Village is named after a famous Kabuki actor (a traditional Japanese theater form that synthesizes singing, music, dance, and drama). Additionally, this name is often given to crows. Kankuro uses puppets as weapons, and puppets were used in Bunraku theater. Kankuro is dressed as Bunraku narrators typically dressed. His most famous puppet is named Crow.
