The story of Stargate SG-1 begins about a year after the events of the feature film, when the United States government learns that an ancient alien device called the Stargate can access a network of such devices on a multitude of planets. SG-1 is an elite Air Force special operations team, one of more than two dozen teams from Earth who explore the galaxy and defend against alien threats such as the Goa'uld, Replicators, and the Ori.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The Earth ships 'Prometheus' and 'Daedalus' mentioned in the series are real space projects. Unlike the 'Daedalus,' which is essentially just a two-stage thermonuclear probe, Prometheus is a prospective NASA space program studying the use of fusion-powered ion engines as primary propulsion systems for 'deep space' spacecraft, including manned missions.
  • The spelling of some characters' names differs slightly between the movie and the series. For example, Jack O'Neill's surname is spelled with two 'l's in the series, and Jackson's wife's name is pronounced Sha're (in the film, it is Sha'uri). In the movie, Jack's deceased son is named Tyler, while in the series, he is named Charlie.
  • In the movie, the planet Abydos is located millions of light-years from Earth in a completely different galaxy. According to the television sequel, Abydos is the closest planet to us with a Stargate, located within our own galaxy.
