What's left behind the scenes
- Initially, it was planned that Michael Palin would play William Makepeace Thackeray (1811-1863) and the narrator in only one episode, but it was later decided to expand his role, and he filmed all his scenes for the seven episodes in a single day. In one interview, Palin named Thackeray's eponymous novel his favorite book.
