Blueberry, released in 2004, is a Western directed by Jan Kounen. The story follows Mike Blueberry, a marshal in a small town on the edge of Indian territory, who was raised partly by the Indians who once saved his life. He tries to keep the peace between the two communities but remains haunted by the death of a woman he loved. When a killer named Wally Blount arrives searching for a treasure hidden by the Indians in the sacred mountains, violence comes to the town, and Blueberry recognises him as the man behind his painful past. Aided by Runi, the shaman he grew up with, Blueberry sets out after Blount and must confront both the intruder and his own memories, which come to the surface through shamanic rituals.
Vincent Cassel plays the title role, with Juliette Lewis as Maria Sullivan, Temuera Morrison as Runi, Ernest Borgnine as Rolling Star, and Djimon Hounsou as Woodhead. The film was written by Gérard Brach, Louis Mellis and Matthieu Le Naour, and produced by Timothy Burrill, Thomas Langmann and Ariel Zeitoun. It was made on a budget of 53 million dollars and runs 124 minutes. It is Kounen's third feature, following Capitaine X and Dobermann.
Audience response on TMDB is low, with the film averaging 4.8 out of 10 from about 250 votes, and critics' reviews collected for the film average 3.9 out of 10 from nine reviews. Both measures point to a muted reception for this large-budget Western.
