Rod Kimble, played by Andy Samberg, is a self-taught stuntman who has never pulled off a successful jump. He rides a moped toward makeshift ramps and ends up in the water or against the obstacle instead. Rod believes his late father was a famous stunt performer, and he keeps staging his own tricks with help from a small crew that includes his half-brother Kevin and a new member, Denise. His stepfather Frank has no patience for him, and the two settle their differences in regular sparring matches that Rod always loses. When Frank falls seriously ill and needs an expensive heart operation, Rod sets out to raise the money with his biggest stunt yet, partly so that Frank will recover and partly so that Rod can finally beat him.
The film was directed by Akiva Schaffer, the first feature he directed, followed later by The Watch, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers and others. Pam Brady wrote the screenplay, and the cast includes Isla Fisher, Jorma Taccone, Bill Hader, Danny McBride and Chris Parnell.
It was made for about 25 million dollars and took in roughly 14 million worldwide, falling short of its budget. On IMDb it holds 6.7 out of 10 from over 91,000 votes, while on TMDB it has 6.4 from around 1,100 votes, indicating a moderate audience following rather than broad approval.
