Coriolanus

Coriolanus is a modern-dress adaptation of Shakespeare's tragedy, moving the story from ancient Rome to a contemporary setting. Caius Martius Coriolanus is a celebrated general whose contempt for the ordinary citizens of Rome turns public opinion against him. Pressured by his mother, Volumnia, to seek the consulship, he refuses to court the people, and the resulting unrest leads to his banishment. He then approaches Tullus Aufidius, the Volscian commander he has long fought, and the two men join forces with the aim of attacking Rome itself.

The film marks Ralph Fiennes's first work as a director, followed by The Invisible Woman and The White Crow. Fiennes also plays Coriolanus, with Gerard Butler as Aufidius, Vanessa Redgrave as Volumnia and Jessica Chastain as Virgilia. John Logan wrote the screenplay and produced alongside Fiennes and Colin Vaines. Shot across several countries, it was made for about 8 million dollars and took roughly 1 million dollars worldwide, a return well below its cost.

Audience response has been moderate, with a rating of 5.8 out of 10 on TMDB from just over five hundred votes. Critics have been more favourable: the film holds 7.4 out of 10 from 156 reviews, a noticeably higher figure than the audience score on TMDB.
