Short description
Teaching Mrs. Tingle centres on Leigh Ann Watson, a high-achieving high-school senior in the town of Grandsboro who needs a strong history grade to secure a college scholarship. Her plans are threatened by Mrs. Tingle, a feared and unforgiving history teacher who accuses her of cheating. Leigh Ann and her friends Luke and Jo Lynn try to resolve the situation, but their attempt to settle matters with the teacher goes badly wrong and leaves the three students entangled in a tense situation that tests their friendships and their judgement.
The film is Kevin Williamson's first as director, following his work as a screenwriter; he also wrote the screenplay, and Cathy Konrad produced. Helen Mirren plays Mrs. Tingle, with Katie Holmes as Leigh Ann, Barry Watson as Luke, Marisa Coughlan as Jo Lynn, and supporting turns from Michael McKean and Jeffrey Tambor. It blends comedy with crime and thriller elements.
Made for 13 million USD, the film took in about 9 million USD worldwide. On IMDb its critics' rating stands at 4 out of 10 from 69 reviews, while on TMDB audience voters give it 5.5 out of 10 from 374 votes, a modest reception on both counts.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film was originally titled "Killing Mrs. Tingle," but after the tragic events of April 20, 1999, at Columbine High School, the film was decided to be renamed to Teaching Mrs. Tingle due to ethical considerations. The Russian release—as in many European countries—retained the original title.
- At that time, Helen Mirren’s sister worked as a teacher. When Mirren told her about the plot of the future film and her role in it, her sister was horrified, and they did not speak to each other for many years afterward.
