Two Lovers

Leonard Kraditor, a young man struggling with his mental health, returns to his parents' home in Brooklyn after a breakdown. His mother and father, who run a dry-cleaning business, try to support him while also steering him toward Sandra, the daughter of a business associate, a warm and grounded woman they would like to see him settle down with. At the same time, Leonard becomes involved with Michelle, a new neighbor whose beauty and unpredictability unsettle him and whose own troubled relationship complicates matters. Caught between the stable future his family wants for him and his feelings for Michelle, Leonard faces a difficult choice.

James Gray directed and co-wrote the film with Ric Menello, following his earlier features Little Odessa, The Yards and We Own the Night. Joaquin Phoenix plays Leonard, with Gwyneth Paltrow as Michelle, Vinessa Shaw as Sandra, Isabella Rossellini and Moni Moshonov as his parents, and Elias Koteas as Ronald Blatt. Produced by Donna Gigliotti, Gray and Anthony Katagas, the film was made for about 12 million dollars and took roughly 16 million worldwide.

On IMDb it holds a rating of 7 out of 10 from around 46,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.9 out of 10 from a much smaller base of about 959 votes. A critics' rating of 6.8 out of 10 from 167 reviews places it broadly in line with those audience scores.
