George of the Jungle

After a plane crash leaves him orphaned in the African jungle, a boy is raised by gorillas and grows into George (Brendan Fraser), a cheerful, clumsy adult who swings through the trees with a toucan, a talking gorilla named Ape and an elephant who behaves like a dog. His life changes when he meets Ursula Stanhope (Leslie Mann), a wealthy American who has travelled to Africa unsure whether to marry her pompous fiancé Lyle (Thomas Haden Church). She brings George back to San Francisco with her, where Lyle and two accomplices try to come between the couple, and the jungle dweller has to find his footing in a city.

The film is a live-action comedy based on the animated television character, directed by Sam Weisman as the fifth of the seven features listed for him, arriving after D2: The Mighty Ducks and Bye Bye Love. Dana Olsen and Audrey Wells wrote the screenplay, while Jon Avnet, David Hoberman and Jordan Kerner produced for Walt Disney Pictures. John Cleese voices Ape, with Richard Roundtree and Abraham Benrubi in supporting parts. Made for about 55 million dollars, it returned roughly 174 million worldwide, a strong result for a family adventure. Audience scores sit close together on IMDb and TMDB, around the middle of the scale, while critics' ratings were similar.
