Bobby
Short description
Set at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles in June 1968, Bobby follows a large group of people whose lives converge on the day of the California Democratic primary. Guests and staff go about their routines as the hotel prepares for a celebration in honour of Senator Robert F. Kennedy, and their personal struggles play out against the gathering crowds and the approaching violence that will change the country.
Emilio Estevez wrote and directed the film, his second feature as director after Men at Work and the first of three later films including The Way and The Public. The ensemble includes Anthony Hopkins, William H. Macy, Harry Belafonte, Freddy Rodríguez, Laurence Fishburne and Heather Graham, among 47 credited cast members.
Made for about 14 million US dollars, Bobby took roughly 20 million at the worldwide box office. On IMDb it holds 7 out of 10 from about 44,000 votes, while on TMDB it has 6.4 out of 10 from around 434 votes. A film critics' rating of 5.7 out of 10 from 173 reviews places it somewhat below the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- The character of Lindsay Lohan is based on a motel clerk where Emilio Estevez was writing the screenplay.
- The director decided not to cast an actor for the role of Robert Kennedy, but to include documentary footage of the senator’s speeches in the film. Kennedy is only played by an actor in some scenes, but in those cases, the viewer does not see his face.
- Several scenes were filmed at the “Ambassador Hotel” in Los Angeles shortly before its demolition. It was in this very hotel that Robert Kennedy was assassinated.
- The scene where Sharon Stone's character cuts her husband's hair (William H. Macy) was not in the script. Sharon was supposed to mime cutting hair, but she actually started cutting William's hair.
- Helen Hunt received the script just one day before filming began.
- It took Emilio Estevez seven years to bring this project to life.
