Jenna Hunterson works as a waitress at Joe's Diner, a modest eatery in a small American town, where she is known for the pies she invents and bakes. She is trapped in a miserable marriage to Earl, a jealous and controlling husband, and dreams of winning a baking contest as a way out. When she learns she is pregnant, her plans seem to collapse, and she finds herself drawn to the town's new doctor, Jim Pomatter. Her colleagues Becky and Dawn and the diner's owner, Old Joe, look on as she tries to work out what she wants from her life.
Waitress was released in 2007. Adrienne Shelly directed it from her own screenplay, and Michael Roiff produced it. Keri Russell plays Jenna, with Nathan Fillion as Dr. Pomatter, Andy Griffith as Old Joe, Cheryl Hines as Becky, Jeremy Sisto as Earl, and Shelly herself as Dawn. The film was made for about 2 million dollars and took roughly 22 million worldwide, a strong return on a small independent budget.
On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.3 from 173 reviews, while on TMDB it is rated 6.7 from 585 votes, so critics rate it somewhat higher than the wider audience does. The cast totals 24 credited performers. It runs 105 minutes and mixes comedy, drama and romance.
