Savage Grace
Short description
Savage Grace is a drama based on the real story of the Baekeland family, heirs to a plastics fortune. Barbara Daly marries Brooks Baekeland and enters high society, but her husband regards her as unsuited to the position, and the marriage grows increasingly strained. Their son Tony, rejected by his father and drawn ever closer to his mother, becomes the focus of Barbara's possessive attention as he grows older. Her attempts to control his life and his sexuality set the family on a path toward tragedy. The film was directed by Tom Kalin, with a screenplay by Howard A. Rodman, and was produced by Christine Vachon, Iker Monfort and Pamela Koffler.
Julianne Moore plays Barbara, Stephen Dillane plays Brooks and Eddie Redmayne plays Tony, with Anne Reid, Elena Anaya and Hugh Dancy in supporting roles. It was released in 2007 and runs 97 minutes.
The film had a budget of about 10 million dollars and took roughly 1 million dollars at the worldwide box office. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.7 from around 13,000 votes, and on TMDB it also sits at 5.7, from about 227 votes, indicating a modest audience response on both platforms.
What's left behind the scenes
- Beach scenes were filmed during the height of tourist season. According to director Tom Kalin, the location chosen for filming turned out to be a favorite beach for German nudists, who constantly wandered into the frame, seriously irritating both the film crew and Julianne Moore, who came to the set with her daughter Liv.
- In an interview with the Daily Mail, published on July 12, 2008, Sam Green (1940-2011) expressed outrage that he was portrayed as bisexual in the film, and vehemently denied allegations that Barbara Baekeland (1922-1972) had an intimate relationship with her son Anthony. Dansy sued the filmmakers, a lawsuit that was still ongoing at the time of his death in 2011. The image of Green, a close friend of Andy Warhol (1928-1987), also appears in the film “I Seduced Andy Warhol” (George Hickenlooper, 2006).
