Short description
Belle Williams is the fastest cab driver in New York, steering a heavily modified taxi through the city's traffic with a speed that has made her reputation. She has her sights set on a career as a racing driver, but her plans collide with Andy Washburn, a police officer whose instincts as an investigator are undone by his complete inability to handle a car. After a bank robbery carried out by a gang of Brazilian women lands in his lap, Washburn needs a driver he can rely on, and the two form an unlikely partnership to chase the robbers across the city.
The film is a remake of the French action comedy of the same name, produced by Luc Besson, who also produced the original. Tim Story directed it, the second of the fifteen features he has made in chronological order, following Barbershop and preceding Fantastic Four. Queen Latifah plays Belle, Jimmy Fallon plays Washburn, and Gisele Bündchen appears as Vanessa, the head of the robbery crew. Thomas Lennon, Jim Kouf and Robert Ben Garant wrote the screenplay, and the cast and crew together run to dozens of credited names.
Made for a budget of 25 million dollars, the film took in about 71 million dollars worldwide. Its three scores sit close together and all point the same way: a critics' rating of 3.6 out of 10 from 105 reviews, an IMDb rating of 4.6 from roughly 48,000 votes, and a TMDB rating of 5.6 from just over 1,200 votes.
