The Invisible Woman

The Invisible Woman is a British drama set in Victorian England, centred on the relationship between Charles Dickens and the young actress Nelly Ternan. When they meet in 1857, Dickens is a celebrated writer and social critic at the height of his fame, married and publicly admired. Nelly, still in her teens, becomes his companion and muse, and the two carry on a relationship that has to be kept hidden from the public and from Dickens's family. The secrecy exacts a price on both of them, and the arrangement shapes Nelly's life for years afterwards. The film is based on Claire Tomalin's biography of Ternan, and the story unfolds with restraint rather than overt melodrama, following the emotional consequences of the affair rather than its public moments.

Ralph Fiennes directed and stars as Dickens. It is the second film he directed, following Coriolanus in 2011 and preceding The White Crow in 2018. Abi Morgan wrote the screenplay, and Felicity Jones plays Nelly, with Joanna Scanlan as Catherine Dickens, Kristin Scott Thomas as Nelly's mother, Tom Hollander as Wilkie Collins and Michelle Fairley as Caroline Graves.

The production was made by BBC Film, Magnolia Mae Films and Headline Pictures on a budget of about 12 million dollars, and it took roughly 3 million dollars worldwide. On TMDB it holds a rating of 5.9 out of 10 from 218 votes, suggesting a modest audience response.
