Alex is fifteen and intersex, living with her parents in an isolated wooden house on the Uruguayan coast. The family left Buenos Aires after her birth so she could grow up away from gossip and prejudice, and her parents have delayed any decision about surgery or hormone treatment until she is old enough to take part in it. When a surgeon friend of the family arrives from the city with his wife and their sixteen-year-old son, Álvaro, the visit unsettles the household. Alex feels drawn to the awkward, inexperienced boy, and their encounter forces her to confront feelings she had not expected, while the parents circle the question of what should be done about her body. Word spreads in the nearby town, and the family's protective seclusion begins to break down.
XXY is Lucía Puenzo's debut feature, released in 2007, which she also wrote; José María Morales and Luis Puenzo produced it. It was made as a co-production between Argentina, Spain and France. Inés Efrón plays Alex, with Martín Piroyansky as Álvaro, Ricardo Darín and Valeria Bertuccelli as her parents, and Germán Palacios and Carolina Peleritti among the supporting cast.
The film runs 86 minutes and took about 3 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7 out of 10 from roughly 15,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.8 out of 10 from about 330 votes; a critics' rating of 7 out of 10 across 53 reviews places it close to the audience score. Puenzo went on to direct The German Doctor, DIVE, Electrophilia and Pepita the Gunslinger.
