We Are Marshall
Short description
In 1970, a plane crash killed most of the Marshall University football team along with coaches, staff and supporters as they returned home to Huntington, West Virginia. The disaster left the town and the surviving players struggling to cope, and the university faced a decision about whether to continue with its football program at all. Into that situation steps Jack Lengyel, a young coach hired to rebuild a team from the few remaining players and a group of inexperienced replacements. His assistant Red Dawson, who was not on the flight, carries the weight of what happened, while people around the university disagree about whether fielding a new side is the right way to honor those who died.
McG directed the film, which sits between Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle and Terminator Salvation in his filmography. Jamie Linden and Cory Helms wrote the screenplay, and Matthew McConaughey plays Lengyel, with Matthew Fox, Anthony Mackie, David Strathairn, Ian McShane and Kate Mara among the cast.
Released in December 2006, the drama cost around 65 million dollars and took in roughly 44 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.1 out of 10 from about 68,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.9 from 826 votes, while critics rated it 5.9 from 126 reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- The scene in the board meeting room, with chants of "We are a team" heard from outside the window, took two days to film. First, they filmed the meeting itself. The chanting was recorded and overlaid onto the footage the next day.
- Ian McShane drew on memories of acquaintances who were players on the Manchester United team that perished in the Munich air disaster on February 6, 1958, to help him develop the character.
- Hundreds of extras, as well as thousands of inflatable mannequins and characters added to the shot using computer technology, served as spectators in the stadiums.
