Up in Smoke

Up in Smoke follows Anthony "Man" Stoner, a drummer and unemployed slacker, and Pedro de Pacas, a fellow marijuana enthusiast he meets by chance. The two hit the road together, drifting through a series of misadventures that eventually land them in Mexico and put them in the path of a band contest at the Roxy Theatre in Los Angeles, where Pedro wears a pink tutu and Man a cape. The film was directed by Lou Adler and written by its two stars, Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong, and was their first feature together, arriving after they had already found success as a comedy and music duo. Adler went on to direct a second film a few years later.

The cast also includes Strother Martin and Edie Adams as Man's parents. The film was released in September 1978 and runs 86 minutes.

It was a commercial success for Paramount, taking in about 42 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a 6.9 rating from roughly 43,000 votes, and on TMDB a 6.6 from far fewer votes, while critics' reviews give it 6 out of 10 across 20 reviews, close to the audience score.
