Goya's Ghosts

Goya's Ghosts is set in Spain in 1792, where the painter Francisco Goya has earned renown as a portraitist of the royal court. His life becomes tangled with the Inquisition when his young muse, Inés, is accused of heresy and imprisoned. Her family asks Goya to plead for her release through Lorenzo, a priest and prominent inquisitor whom the painter has depicted. The relationship between the two men, and the fates of all three, take a course none of them foresees.

Miloš Forman directed and wrote the screenplay with Jean-Claude Carrière, and Saul Zaentz produced. It was Forman's tenth feature film, arriving after Man on the Moon and following a filmography that includes The Firemen's Ball, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Amadeus and The People vs. Larry Flynt. Javier Bardem plays Lorenzo, Natalie Portman plays Inés, and Stellan Skarsgård plays Goya, with Randy Quaid as King Carlos IV and Michael Lonsdale as the Inquisitor General, among 39 credited cast members.

Released in November 2006, the film carries a budget of 50 million US dollars and a worldwide gross of about 9 million, a wide gap between cost and return. On IMDb it holds 6.9 out of 10 from roughly 33,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.6 from 549 votes. A film critics' rating of 5.1 from 86 reviews places it below both audience scores.
