David Kepesh is a cultural critic and literature professor who has long kept his relationships with women casual and uncommitted. That changes when he meets Consuela Castillo, a student from a Cuban exile family, whose presence stirs in him a possessiveness and jealousy he has never experienced before. What begins as another of his affairs turns into something that unsettles his carefully guarded independence, pulling him between desire and the fear of losing her.
Isabel Coixet directed the film, which came after My Life Without Me and Paris Je T'aime in her filmography, from a screenplay by Nicholas Meyer. Ben Kingsley plays David, Penélope Cruz plays Consuela, and the supporting cast includes Patricia Clarkson, Peter Sarsgaard, Dennis Hopper and Sonja Bennett. Lakeshore Entertainment produced the film, which runs 112 minutes and was released in August 2008. Made for about 13 million dollars, it earned roughly 15 million worldwide, a modest return.
On IMDb, the film holds a critics' rating of 6.7 out of 10 from 122 reviews, while on TMDB it has a rating of 6.3 out of 10 from 317 votes. The two scores sit close together, suggesting a broadly similar response from reviewers and audiences alike.
