Diana
Short description
Diana is a biographical drama about the final years of Diana, Princess of Wales, focusing on her relationship with Hasnat Khan, a Pakistani heart surgeon she met at a London hospital in 1995. Their romance develops quietly at first, kept away from public view, but the gap between her worldwide fame and his preference for a private life puts constant pressure on the couple. The film also follows her public work, including her campaign against land mines, during a period when her marriage to Prince Charles had ended and she was searching for a sense of purpose.
The film is directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel, whose earlier work includes Downfall and The Invasion, and it was written by Stephen Jeffreys. Naomi Watts plays Diana, with Naveen Andrews as Khan. Charles Edwards, Douglas Hodge, Cas Anvar and Geraldine James appear in supporting roles.
Diana was released in 2013 and runs 113 minutes. It was produced across Belgium, the United Kingdom, France and Sweden on a budget of about 15 million dollars, and it took roughly 22 million dollars worldwide. Audience scores are modest: on IMDb it holds 5.6 from around 21,000 votes, and on TMDB it also stands at 5.6, from a much smaller pool of 514 votes. A critics' rating of 3.5 from 104 reviews is lower still, placing the film below its audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- The jewelry brand Chopard officially presented a collection of jewelry that was used during the filming of the movie. The pieces almost exactly recreate iconic jewelry worn by Princess Diana at important events.
- Posters for the film were accidentally placed on Place Alma in Paris, near the entrance to the tunnel where the princess died in a car crash in 1997. The placement of the posters caused a storm of public outrage, and they were eventually removed at the request of the French distributor Le Pacte.
- Jessica Chastain could have played the role of Princess Diana, but left the project due to a scheduling conflict.
- Key scenes of Diana and Dodi Al Fayed relaxing on his family yacht were filmed on the 45-meter luxury yacht 'Princess Yolanda'. The opening and closing scenes in the presidential suite of the Paris Ritz hotel were filmed at 'Fetcham Park House' in Surrey.
- During a Red Cross mission in 1996, Diana is driven in a Land Cruiser 100, which was released in 1998. A Range Rover Sport, released in 2005, is also visible in one scene.
- The film's screenplay is based on Kate Snell's book "Diana: Her Last Love".
