Short description

Five criminals gather to rob a bank across the Mexican border, using plans for a heist they believe will pay off in the millions. Among them is Luther, whose car breaks down near a roadside bar, and what happens to him there changes everything the gang had planned. The robbers soon find themselves facing something far more dangerous than the police pursuing them, and the job turns into a fight to survive the night.

This 1999 crime horror film is a standalone follow-up to From Dusk Till Dawn, set in the same world but with a different cast of characters. Scott Spiegel directed it, his second feature after Intruder (1989), from a screenplay he wrote with Duane Whitaker. Robert Patrick leads as Buck, with Bo Hopkins as Sheriff Lawson, Whitaker as Luther, Muse Watson, Brett Harrelson and Raymond Cruz among the main cast. It was produced by Gianni Nunnari, Meir Teper and Michael S. Murphey for Dimension Films, Miramax, A Band Apart and Los Luchadores Productions, on a budget of about 5 million dollars.

The film runs 88 minutes and mixes action, crime, horror and thriller elements. On TMDB it holds a rating of 4.6 out of 10 from 533 votes, indicating a generally weak audience response. Made cheaply and aimed at the direct-to-video market, it remains best known as a modest continuation of the vampire-crime premise of the original film.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Although the film is titled 'From Dusk Till Dawn 2', it is neither a sequel nor a prequel to the first movie, but rather a companion piece. The Gecko brothers are mentioned in the film—Otis tells his colleague that the Gecko brothers killed Sheriff McGraw (the killing of Sheriff McGraw occurred in the first film due to the Gecko brothers). However, in this film, the Titty Twister bar is still standing rather than destroyed, and one of its inhabitants—the bartender Razor Charlie—is still alive.
  • Scott Spiegel, the director of this film, played a porn director in the scene where Jesus told a story about his friend's sister.
