Sherman Klump, a professor and genetics researcher, has found happiness with Denise Gaines, a fellow scientist, and the two are preparing to marry. Sherman has also developed a formula that reverses the aging process, which draws interest from those around him. His troubles come from Buddy Love, the slick and crude alter ego he thought he had left behind. Buddy resurfaces with plans of his own, including cashing in on the rejuvenation serum, and Sherman tries to rid himself of his double for good. The attempt goes wrong, and Buddy's push to lead a life of his own disrupts Sherman's wedding plans and involves the whole Klump family.
Peter Segal directed the film, which followed Tommy Boy and My Fellow Americans in his filmography. Eddie Murphy plays Sherman, Buddy and multiple members of the Klump family, with Janet Jackson as Denise, Larry Miller as Dean Richmond, John Ales as Jason, and Richard Gant and Anna Maria Horsford as Denise's parents. Brian Grazer produced, and Chris Weitz, Paul Weitz and David Sheffield wrote the screenplay.
Made for 84 million dollars, the film took in about 166 million worldwide, a solid return though a steep drop from the first film's grosses. Audiences were unenthusiastic: on IMDb it holds 4.5/10 from 55,000 votes, and on TMDB 5/10 from 1,445 votes. A critics' rating of 4.9/10 from 88 reviews places it close to the audience scores. It is a sequel to the 1996 film.
