Thomas, a former soldier who was discharged from the army after serving in Afghanistan, returns to Jerichow, a small town in northeastern Germany, when he learns his mother has died and left him the family house. He wants to renovate it and start over, but work is scarce and money shorter still. His situation changes when he meets Ali Özkan, a Turkish-born entrepreneur who runs a string of snack bars and supplies them himself. Because Ali has lost his driving licence for a year, he needs a driver and takes Thomas on, and the two men slowly build a bond of trust. That bond is complicated by Ali's wife Laura, whose presence draws Thomas in and sets the three of them on a collision course. Each of them carries secrets and wants both love and security, and getting what they want may only be possible through betrayal. Christian Petzold wrote and directed the film, which came between Ghosts and Barbara in his filmography. Benno Fürmann plays Thomas, Nina Hoss plays Laura and Hilmi Sözer plays Ali. On IMDb the film holds a rating of 7 out of 10 from around 3,600 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.5 out of 10 from a much smaller number of votes. A critics' rating of 7.2 out of 10 from 39 reviews places it slightly above the audience scores.
