Beyond Outrage

A police crackdown on organized crime sets off a nationwide struggle between the Sanno syndicate in the east and the Hanabishi in the west. A detective named Kataoka works behind the scenes to push the two groups toward open conflict, hoping they will weaken each other. His plan involves releasing Otomo, a former boss whose clan was crushed by the Sanno and who was widely believed to have died in prison. Otomo's return brings further deception and betrayal among the rival families.

Takeshi Kitano directed and wrote the film, the thirteenth of the sixteen features he has directed and the second in a loose trilogy that began with Outrage in 2010 and continued with Outrage Coda in 2017. Kitano also stars as Otomo, alongside Ryo Kase, Toshiyuki Nishida, Shun Sugata, Ken Mitsuishi and Tomokazu Miura, with forty-six credited cast members in all. The production was handled by Warner Bros. Japan, Bandai Visual, TV Tokyo and Office Kitano.

The film took about 16 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.7 out of 10 from roughly 7,800 votes, and on TMDB 7 out of 10 from around 285 votes, indicating a modest but solid audience response. A critics' rating of 5.8 out of 10 from seventeen reviews places it below both audience scores.
