Elite Squad: The Enemy Within continues the story of Roberto Nascimento, now a lieutenant-colonel leading BOPE, the special operations unit of Rio de Janeiro's military police. A violent operation to put down a prison rebellion brings accusations of brutality from human rights activist Diogo Fraga. Nascimento is removed from his command and moved into a state security post, while his deputy André Matias is transferred to the regular military police. From his new position, Nascimento finds that corrupt officers and politicians are tied to the same criminal networks he once fought on the streets.
The film is the second in a trilogy, following Elite Squad. Wagner Moura returns as Nascimento, with Irandhir Santos, André Ramiro, Milhem Cortaz, Maria Ribeiro and Seu Jorge in supporting roles. José Padilha directs and shares the screenplay with Bráulio Mantovani, and he produces with Marcos Prado. It sits between the documentary Garapa and Padilha's later English-language features among the five films he directed.
Released in 2010, the film earned about 63 million dollars worldwide, a strong result for a Brazilian production. On IMDb it holds 8 out of 10 from around 92,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.9 out of 10 from over 2,000 votes. A critics' rating of 7 out of 10 from 46 reviews places it close to those audience scores, indicating broad agreement among viewers and reviewers.
