Short description
Ben Willis is an art student whose girlfriend has just ended their relationship. The breakup leaves him unable to sleep, and rather than lie awake he takes a job on the night shift at a local supermarket. His coworkers have their own ways of getting through the long, quiet hours, and Ben finds himself drawn to Sharon, the reserved checkout girl. What sets the film apart is the way Ben's imagination works: he pictures time standing still around him, letting him study the people frozen mid-motion and commit them to canvas. Sean Ellis wrote and directed, adapting his own earlier short film of the same name into this feature, the second title in his directing career and the one that followed the short.
Sean Biggerstaff leads as Ben, with Emilia Fox as Sharon, Shaun Evans, Michael Dixon, Michelle Ryan and Stuart Goodwin among the large credited cast of fifty. The film was made in the United Kingdom by Lipsync Productions, Ugly Duckling Films and Left Turn Films, with Ellis producing alongside Lene Bausager. It runs 102 minutes and mixes comedy, drama and romance.
On release, the film took about 2 million dollars worldwide, a modest figure for a British independent production. Audiences have responded more warmly than critics: on TMDB it holds 7 out of 10 from roughly 1,450 votes, while the critics' rating stands at 5.5 out of 10 from 53 reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film largely incorporated the identically titled 18-minute short film, which was nominated for an Oscar in 2006.
- Production of the full-length film began more than a year after work on the short film was completed. In December 2004, director and screenwriter Sean Ellis decided to develop the plot and wrote the film's screenplay in seven days. In March 2005, he reached agreements with all the key actors, then secured funding, and in May of the same year, filming began, lasting 25 days.
- The budget did not allow for the purchase of uniforms for the supermarket employees, so the actors filmed in their own clothes.
- At the end of the film (credits), the popular song "What Else Is There?" (number 1 in the UK Dance Chart in 2005) by the Norwegian group Röyksopp plays.
- The shampoo that Barry and Matt referred to as "help for women" (because it was phallic in shape) is a genuine Umberto Giannini brand.
