The Night Flier
Short description
The Night Flier follows Richard Dees, a tabloid journalist whose career has seen better days. When his editor hands him a story about a killer who flies a black Cessna between small airfields and leaves drained bodies behind, Dees initially dismisses it as another tall tale. He soon finds reason to take the assignment seriously, and his investigation draws him into a hunt for a pilot who is far more dangerous than an ordinary murderer. The film is based on a short story by Stephen King.
Mark Pavia directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Jack O'Donnell, working from a budget of about 1 million USD. It was his first feature, and he did not direct another until Fender Bender in 2016. Miguel Ferrer leads the cast as Dees, with Julie Entwisle as fellow reporter Katherine Blair, Dan Monahan as editor Merton Morrison, and Michael H. Moss as Dwight Renfield. The production was a collaboration between Italian and American companies.
On IMDb, the film holds a critics' rating of 4.1/10 from 6 reviews, while on TMDB it has a rating of 6/10 from 273 votes, indicating that general viewers have responded more warmly than the small group of critics. Released in 1997 and running 93 minutes, the film mixes horror and mystery elements.
