Undercover Brother
Short description
Undercover Brother is a 2002 action comedy about a secret agent recruited by a covert African-American organization. When a black presidential candidate begins behaving oddly during his campaign, the agent goes undercover inside the operations of a white establishment group known as The Man to discover what has happened to him. Teamed with agent Sistah Girl, he navigates a conspiracy aimed at derailing the candidate, while his flamboyant style and funk-era tastes set him apart from the world he is sent to infiltrate.
Malcolm D. Lee directed the film, his first feature, from a screenplay by Michael McCullers and John Ridley; Brian Grazer was among the producers. Eddie Griffin plays the lead, with Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor as Sistah Girl, Chi McBride as The Chief, Chris Kattan as Mr. Feather, Denise Richards as White She Devil and Neil Patrick Harris as Lance. The production had a budget of 25 million dollars and took about 42 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 5.9 out of 10 from roughly 38,000 votes, and on TMDB it also stands at 5.9, from about 456 votes.
What's left behind the scenes
- The building shown in the film is a water filtration station in one of Toronto's districts. It was also used as a filming location for, among others, John Carpenter's horror film "In the Mouth of Madness" (1994). After the September 11, 2001 attacks in the US, the building was permanently closed to filming.
- On the wall of the character's office, played by Chi McBride, hang photographs, including those of actors Courtney B. Vance, Danny Glover, Andre Braugher, and Richard Pryor.
- Denise Richards stated that her character's buttocks were enhanced using digital technology.
- Jim Kelly appeared in a couple of scenes – he starred in Robert Clouse's action films 'Enter the Dragon' (1973) and 'Black Belt Jones' (1974) – but these scenes were not included in the film and were only preserved on the DVD release.
- For the shooting of the scene where Neil Patrick Harris's character emerges from a van in a cloud of drug smoke, the actor actually smoked a joint.
