Flickering Lights

Four small-time Copenhagen criminals make the mistake of stealing four million kroner that was meant for their boss. Torkild, Peter, Arne and Stefan go on the run with the money, intending to reach Barcelona and a warmer, easier life. Their getaway car breaks down in a remote forest, and the men take shelter in a dilapidated house. What was supposed to be a brief hiding place becomes something else as the weeks pass: the gang settles in, and the idea of transforming the old place into a restaurant begins to seem more appealing than the life they left behind. Their old associates, however, are not about to forget the money.

Flickering Lights was released in 2000 and marks the second feature directed by Anders Thomas Jensen, who also wrote the screenplay. It followed Ernst & the Light (1996) and preceded The Green Butchers (2003), Adam's Apples (2005), Men & Chicken (2015), Riders of Justice (2020) and The Last Viking (2025). The main roles are played by Søren Pilmark, Ulrich Thomsen, Mads Mikkelsen, Nikolaj Lie Kaas, Sofie Gråbøl and Iben Hjejle, with a credited cast of 33 and around 90 credited crew members.

On IMDb the film holds 7.5 out of 10 from roughly 27,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.2 out of 10 from about 261 votes. A critics' rating stands at 6.3 out of 10 from 10 reviews, lower than the audience scores. Made in Denmark and Sweden, it took in about 3 million dollars worldwide. The film is a crime comedy with action elements, running 109 minutes.
