What's left behind the scenes
- 'Boosters' in the title is a slang term referring to people who steal designer clothing from expensive stores and sell it at a discount.
- According to director, screenwriter, and producer Boots Riley, the film's visuals were intentionally made to look "janky" (a term used to describe something of low quality, malfunctioning, or unreliable). He didn't want everything in the movie to look pristine and flawless.
- Will Poulter (who played the store manager) suggested lightening his character's hair himself. This idea came from him, rather than from the costume designers or makeup artists.
- The film's bold use of color is credited to the costumes and sets rather than colored lighting. This was a decision made by cinematographer Natasha Briier.
- Naomi Ackie, who played one of the lead characters and was born in London, had to develop an Oakland accent for the role.
- Panavision created special lenses for the shoot that combined the qualities of modern lenses (more light) and vintage ones (soft focus and enhanced color). According to Boots Riley, "when the image is digital and incredibly crisp, color begins to lose its significance."
- Costume designer Shirley Kurata selected the characters' outfits based on the premise that different personalities coexist within each of them. Accordingly, the characters had one wardrobe for their daily lives and a separate one for their store raids.
- Shirley Kurata specifically chose costumes for Corvette (played by Keke Palmer) to look as if they were designed by Corvette herself, who is a fashion designer in the story.
- Every store shown in the film featured products of only one color. Costume designer Shirley Kurata had to select the characters' clothing colors so that they would harmonize with the monochrome color scheme of each store.
- Boots Riley drew inspiration from the work of Ray Harryhausen, a renowned artist, designer, and stop-motion visual effects master known, in particular, for his work on Desmond Davis's adventure action film 'Clash of the Titans' (1981). Two sets of miniature figures of various sizes were created for the animated finale. For the car chase scenes, buildings and streets were created in 1:12 scale, while the characters were created in 1:6 scale.
