Short description

Annie Braddock, a recent college graduate from a working-class background, arrives in New York uncertain about the career her mother expects her to pursue. A chance encounter in Central Park leads her into a job as a nanny for a wealthy Manhattan family, and she soon finds herself navigating their household while trying to manage her own life. The couple's marriage grows increasingly strained during her nine months with them, and Annie must balance their problems, a new romance and the care of their young son.

The film was directed by Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini, who also wrote the screenplay. It followed their 2003 film American Splendor and came before The Extra Man in 2010. Scarlett Johansson plays Annie, with Laura Linney as Mrs. X, Alicia Keys as Lynette and Chris Evans as a romantic interest. The cast and crew credits run to 61 and 135 names respectively.

Released in August 2007, the film had a budget of 20 million dollars and took about 48 million dollars worldwide, a solid return on its production cost. On IMDb it holds 6.2 out of 10 from around 67,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.4 out of 10 from roughly 1,265 votes. A critics' rating of 5.2 out of 10 from 131 reviews places it below both audience scores.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The filmmakers report that the ending of the adaptation will differ from the finale of the book by 100%.
  • In the book, the main character's name is Nan, which sounds similar to the English 'the Nanny'.
  • The entire narrative of the film is voiced over by Scarlett Johansson.
  • Filming took place in New York City in April-May 2006. During production, a curious incident occurred involving Scarlett Johansson and the city's mayor, Michael Bloomberg. City officials announced a new tax policy to attract film production to New York, and a conference was held jointly with the crew of 'The Nanny Diaries'. However, at the last moment, when Mayor Bloomberg publicly stated how 'happy he was to be near such a beauty as Scarlett,' Scarlett herself was nowhere to be found: the actress was working on set at that moment, ignoring the press conference. In response to the minor scandal caused by this event, Johansson stated: 'Production always comes first'.
  • Other differences from the book: in the film's plot, Annie will have already finished college; before moving in with the X family, she will live with her mother, who works as a nurse; Annie will hide from her mother that she is a nanny, claiming to be a bank employee.
