Short description
Brideshead Revisited is a British drama set largely between the two world wars. At Oxford, Charles Ryder, a middle-class student with artistic ambitions, is drawn into the orbit of Sebastian Flyte, the charismatic son of an aristocratic family. Sebastian takes him to Brideshead, the family's grand country house, and Charles becomes fascinated by the wealth and privilege he finds there. Over the years he grows close to the Flytes, and falls for Sebastian's sister Julia, but the family's devout Catholicism stands between him and any lasting place among them. A wartime return to the estate frames the story as a recollection of that youth.
Julian Jarrold directed, working from a screenplay by Andrew Davies and Jeremy Brock, and the film adapts Evelyn Waugh's novel. It followed Jarrold's Kinky Boots and Becoming Jane and preceded later work including Red Riding: The Year of Our Lord 1974 and A Royal Night Out. Matthew Goode plays Charles, with Ben Whishaw as Sebastian, Hayley Atwell as Julia, and Emma Thompson and Michael Gambon as the parents. The production had a budget of about 20 million dollars and took roughly 13 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.6 from 14,000 votes; on TMDB it rates 6.3 from 170 votes, while critics gave it 6.3 from 138 reviews.

- The film is based on Evelyn Waugh's novel «Brideshead Revisited» (1945).
- Jude Law was initially invited for the role of Sebastian. However, the actor left the project when director David Yates was replaced by Julian Jarrold.
- Charles Ryder and Julia Flyte were, in turn, considered for roles to be played by Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connelly, but they left the project for the same reasons as Law.
- Filming took place in Oxford and Venice.
- Emma Thompson threatened to leave the project if they didn't stop pressuring actress Hayley Atwell to lose weight. During one lunch, Harvey Weinstein insulted the actress, stating that she looked like a pig on camera and shouldn't eat so much.
- The film was shot in 2007, which was the wettest summer on record in England. It rained in almost all filming locations, and parts of the city of Oxford and the county of Yorkshire were flooded. Once, the cast and crew were unable to leave a train due to the rain.
- Real Oxford students were used in the scenes set in Oxford, and they played students from the 1920s. In the scene of the first meeting of the characters played by Matthew Goode and Ben Whishaw, you can spot actual members of the exclusive Bullingdon Club in their traditional blazers. Some members of the same club can also be seen in the scene in the cafeteria the next day.
