Nelly and Monsieur Arnaud

Nelly and Monsieur Arnaud is a French drama about a young woman in her mid-twenties who is separating from her husband and struggling financially. Through a friend she meets Pierre Arnaud, a retired judge some forty years her senior, who offers to settle her debts if she will type up the memoirs he has written. She takes the job, leaves her husband Jérôme, and gradually spends more of her time in the older man's company. The two form a close, ambiguous bond that goes beyond employer and employee, and it is unsettled when Nelly becomes involved with Vincent, the publisher interested in Arnaud's manuscript.

Claude Sautet directed and co-wrote the film with Jacques Fieschi and Yves Ulmann, and Alain Sarde produced it. It is the fifth of the director's feature films listed here, arriving after Mado in 1976. Emmanuelle Béart plays Nelly opposite Michel Serrault as Arnaud, with Claire Nadeau, Françoise Brion, Michael Lonsdale and Charles Berling among the twenty-six credited cast members.

Released in October 1995, the film runs 106 minutes and was a co-production of France, Italy and Germany. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.2 from around 5,400 votes, and on TMDB a rating of 7 from roughly 147 votes, indicating a well-regarded film with a modest but steady audience. A critics' rating of 7.6 from twenty-four reviews places it slightly above the viewer scores.
