An elderly woman living in the United States receives an unexpected phone call and travels back to the rural cottage in South Korea where she spent part of her childhood. There, memories of events from 47 years earlier return: as a young girl, she and her family moved from Seoul to the countryside so that she could recover from a lung illness. The house they settled into was provided by Ji-tae, whose father had worked with the family's late father. The girl discovers that a feral young man is living in a locked outbuilding on the property. The family takes him in as an orphan and names him Chul-soo, though he cannot speak, read or write, and she sets about teaching him how to eat, dress and behave. Ji-tae, meanwhile, has his own intentions toward her.
