Short description
Adam is a reclusive underground musician living in a worn-down Detroit, dressing as though the 1960s never ended, avoiding daylight and growing increasingly weary of the direction humanity has taken. Across the sea in Tangier, Eve, his companion of several centuries, fills her evenings with poetry and old friends. Both are vampires who long ago agreed to forgo killing for blood, sourcing what they need from hospitals instead. The two have spent time apart, but their separation does not last, and Eve travels to Detroit to be with him.
Their reunion is unsettled by the arrival of Eve's younger sister Ava, whose impulsive and uncontrolled behaviour threatens the fragile arrangement the couple has built. Strange deaths follow in the city, pushing Adam and Eve to leave for North Africa, though their troubles appear far from over.
Jim Jarmusch wrote and directed the film, the eleventh of the fourteen features he has directed, following The Limits of Control and preceding Paterson. Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston play Eve and Adam, with Mia Wasikowska as Ava, Anton Yelchin as Ian, Jeffrey Wright as Dr. Watson and Slimane Dazi as Bilal. Made for about 7 million USD, it took a similar amount worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.2/10 from 115,000 votes and on TMDB 7.2/10 from 2,463 votes, close to the critics' 7.5/10 from 204 reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- Tom Hiddleston got the role that could have gone to Michael Fassbender.
- In the initial version of the script, Eve was 2000 years old and a druid from a matriarchal Celtic tribe. Adam was 500-600 years old. Ultimately, Jim Jarmusch decided that Adam and Eve would know each other's true age, so they wouldn't have a reason to talk about it in the film.
- The morning after the club. Adam and Eve enter a room. Seeing a dead friend on the couch, Eva drops a closed flask, and then blood flows from an open flask lying on the floor, with the cap nearby.
- According to the director, he drew inspiration for the film from Mark Twain’s “The Diaries of Adam and Eve.”

Stephen Dedalus is one of the main characters in James Joyce’s novel “Ulysses,” and Daisy Buchanan is the name of the main character in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby.”
- It took Jim Jarmusch seven years to raise the funds to realize the project.
- Initially, the film had a small amount of action, but when director Jim Jarmusch was asked to add more of such scenes, he responded by doing the opposite and removing all the existing action scenes.
- Although director Jim Jarmusch has an aversion to digital cinematography and wanted to shoot the film on film, he was forced to use Arri Alexa digital cameras due to budget constraints. Before he could achieve a picture he found acceptable, he had to experiment with low lighting and various lenses.
