The Time Traveler's Wife centres on Henry DeTamble, a Chicago librarian with a rare genetic condition that pulls him through time without warning. His disappearances are sudden and his arrivals unpredictable, and they shape his relationship with Clare Abshire, an artist who meets him at different points of her life, often when he is a different age. The two build a life together even though they can never be sure when they will next see each other.
The film is an adaptation of Audrey Niffenegger's novel, directed by Robert Schwentke, who had previously made The Family Jewels and Flightplan. It was followed in his filmography by RED, R.I.P.D., Insurgent, Allegiant, The Captain, Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins and Seneca. Bruce Joel Rubin wrote the screenplay, and the cast includes Eric Bana as Henry, Rachel McAdams as Clare, and Arliss Howard, Ron Livingston, Stephen Tobolowsky and Michelle Nolden in supporting roles. It was released in August 2009 and runs 107 minutes.
The film cost around 39 million dollars and took about 101 million dollars worldwide, a return that clearly exceeded its production cost. It holds a 7.1 rating on IMDb from roughly 165,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 7.0 from a much smaller number of votes. A film critics' rating of 5.2 from 152 reviews is markedly lower than those audience scores.
