The Protected Men

Set in Germany shortly before an election, this science fiction comedy explores the societal collapse triggered by a mysterious virus that exclusively affects men. The illness causes sexual obsession and death, leading to a violent conflict between the genders. While scientists work to create a vaccine, Anita and Sarah establish a feminist party focused on equality and sustainability. However, the self-proclaimed chancellor, Sarah Bedford, secretly hinders the medical efforts to maintain her political grip on power. The story is based on the novel by Robert Merle.

The film was directed and written by Irene von Alberti. It is a joint production between Germany and France, involving ZDF, ARTE, and Filmgalerie 451. The main cast features Britta Hammelstein as Anita Martinelli and Mavie Hörbiger as Sarah Bedford, alongside Yousef Sweid, Bibiana Beglau, Godehard Giese, and Julika Jenkins. A total of 22 actors are credited in the production. Released on December 12, 2024, the movie has a runtime of 104 minutes.
