In the Land of Women follows Carter Webb, a young Los Angeles screenwriter who leaves the city after a painful breakup with his girlfriend, an actress. He moves to a suburb of Detroit to look after his grandmother, intending to keep to himself and write. Instead he becomes involved with the family living across the street: Sarah Hardwicke and her two daughters, teenage Lucy and eleven-year-old Paige. The friendships he forms with these women, and with his grandmother, gradually change how he sees his own life.
