Walt Kowalski is a retired autoworker and Korean War veteran living alone in a Michigan neighborhood that has changed around him. His wife has died, his relationship with his grown sons is strained, and his closest company is his dog Daisy and the 1972 Ford Gran Torino he keeps in immaculate condition. When a Hmong family moves in next door, Walt makes no secret of his resentment toward his new neighbors. Trouble arrives when their teenage son, Thao, is pressured by a local gang into trying to steal the Gran Torino as an initiation. The attempt fails, but it draws Walt into the family's troubles and into a conflict with the gang that pushes him to reconsider the man he has become.
Clint Eastwood directed and stars, working from a screenplay by Nick Schenk. The film is the twenty-eighth Eastwood directed, arriving between Flags of Our Fathers and Changeling. Christopher Carley plays Father Janovich, with Bee Vang as Thao, Ahney Her as Sue, and Brian Haley and Geraldine Hughes among the supporting cast. Produced partly through Eastwood's Malpaso Productions alongside Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures, it cost about 33 million dollars and took roughly 270 million worldwide, a strong return on its budget. On IMDb it holds 8.1/10 from around 859,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 8/10 from far fewer votes; a critics' rating of 7.4/10 from 234 reviews places it somewhat below the audience scores.
