The Liberator

The Liberator is a historical drama about Simón Bolívar, the Venezuelan military and political figure who led the nineteenth-century campaigns that freed much of Latin America from Spanish rule. Edgar Ramírez plays Bolívar, whose education in Europe exposes him to Enlightenment ideas that he carries home to a Venezuela where colonial society is stirring with new political awareness. The film follows his rise from a young man drawn into a Caracas resistance group to the commander of far-reaching military campaigns, driven by a vision of uniting South America. Alberto Arvelo directed from a screenplay by Timothy J. Sexton, with María Valverde, Iwan Rheon, Danny Huston, Imanol Arias and Gary Lewis among the credited cast of 24.

Produced between Venezuela and Spain, the film had a budget of 50 million US dollars and a worldwide box office of about 5 million. On IMDb it holds 6.7 out of 10 from roughly 5,800 votes, and on TMDB 6.8 out of 10 from 164 votes, while a critics' rating stands at 5.3 out of 10 from 25 reviews.
